Virginia Powers Leftwich was born on Hazel Mountain, near Dante VA.  Her father was a coal miner, her mother a homemaker, and she grew up on the family farm.  She always loved school and learning, but lacked prospects for higher education because there was no money for such things in her day.  Fortunately she was able to attend heard about a small college in East Tennessee, called Hiwassee, run by the Holston Conference of the Methodist Church.  Hiwassee made it possible for her to attend college.  Upon completion of her Associates Degree, she received her Bachelors from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.  She started teaching back in Dickenson Co. Virginia.

Along the way she married and started a family.  Her husband was drafted during the Korean War, and they were sent to Missouri.  After the war, they started working as teachers near St. Louis, MO, and her family continued to grow.  She continued her education, obtaining a Masters Degree from Washington College in St. Louis, and finally a PhD from the University of Missouri in Columbia.   She had five children, worked, and educated herself with seemingly tireless energy. 

During her studies at the University of MO, she began research on mined land owned by Peabody Coal Company.  Later, Peabody invited her to become their head reclamation scientist.  Her specialty was reclaiming land that had been mined and restoring it to usable land for farming and growing trees.  She loved her work and started collecting information to write a history of Peabody Coal, and collecting interesting rocks, fossils, and memorabilia along the way.

Virginia also loved antiques, dishes and glassware, flea markets, and most of all, books.  She collected these things over the course of her work life.  When she inherited a portion of her family farm, she retired to Virginia, and took on a huge project of remodeling and updating the original family home.  She housed her amazing collections there until she relocated to Maryville, TN near one of her daughters.

The number of her possessions, and the extent of her collections is quite vast.  Virginia was interested in many different subjects, and she studied them all.  She made sure her children went to school, and later college.  She was smart, funny, and energetic, but most of all, she was interesting.  Anyone who attends this auction will be able to see the extent of her interests and efforts.   The family hopes that anyone who buys her treasures will appreciate them the way she did.

Cornerstone items for this auction include a rare 1969 Alice in Wonderland with illustrations by Salvador Dali and signed by Dali . Also three original oils on canvas by renowned artist J. Vance Miller of Blacksburg Virginia and an original oil by Roland Bailey of Roanoke Virginia.

Many lots in this auction are from the Johnson and McClench families of Massachusetts. The Johnson family owned Oak Knoll in Danvers Massachusetts and cared for the poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier from 1876 until til his death in 1892. A cane presented to Whittier is included in this auction as well as a very impressive Gorham sterling tureen that was from Oak Knoll. Mary Ann Johnson married Joseph U McClench and many more lots in this sale descended through these two families including the Whittier items as well as family silver, Civil War swords, the naval sword and nautical instruments of Donald McClench who served in WWI and WWII as well as teaching navigation at the US Naval Academy at Annapolis as well as items he brought home from is travels.
