Legend has it that Steve was born to be a horse trainer. Together he & Diane Bred, raised & showed their Morgan's.  They raised & trained many successful show horses. Including champion Morgan stallion Von Lu Starbuck.
He & Diane were often regarded as Champions of the Virginia Horse Industry. Dedicated charter members of the Board for the Virginia Horse Center. They helped VHC Transition from a public to a private organization. McBroom was inducted into the Virginia Horse Center Hall of Fame in 2010 in recognition of his dedicated leadership, professional achievements and passion for the Virginia horse community at large according to an article by Roanoke Equestrian.
